Structure and Distribution of an Unrecognized Interstitium in Human Tissues

This is actually a huge breakthrough, an entirely new system of transferring lymphatic and extracellular fluid has been discovered accidentally while performing endomicroscopy of the bile ducts. This new system was never observed before because the methods of preserving tissues for autopsy collapsed the structure.

This system is described as a collagen-supported network of endothelial cells that transports fluid around the body and may have a function as drainage pathway for the lymphatic system as well as acting as a shock absorber for trauma.

This is a rare kind of breakthrough where our knowledge of basic anatomy is extended. This is something that hasn't happened for decades, and could have huge implications for the treatment of fibrosis, edema, and cancer metastasis.
